Rock and Soul Deep South is a road trip to the origins of American pop music. In search for the birthplace of rock and roll, its sources and beyond. Encounters with Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Little Richard, Scotty Moore, James Brown and Sly Stone are highlighted, while visiting American music cities Louisville Kentucky, Nashville & Memphis Tennessee, Muscle Shoals Alabama, Clarksdale Mississippi and New Orleans Louisiana.
Dirk W. de Jong works as a photographer since 1990 and lives in the Amsterdam Area in The Netherlands. He travelled across the USA since 1991. His love for music and photography is absolute. On the road the photographer meets the artists, back home the artists hit the road with him. Faces, places and all that music leaves us with a gallery of photographs and lots of stories to tell.
‘Dirk W. de Jong enters into the heart and soul, without a romantic view. He tells it like it is. His photos always tell a story, showing the world in an earthy way. Just like the music itself!’ Herman van der Horst.
